The Lagoon Upgrade Project represents a major milestone in modernizing local wastewater infrastructure and protecting the Sheep River. First identified in 2010, the project improves system reliability, supports regional growth, and ensures long-term environmental protection.
Key improvements include:
Replacement of aging infrastructure, including the lagoon aeration system and transfer lift station
Addition of a Submerged Aerated Gravel Filter (SAGR) for ammonia removal
A new tertiary treatment facility for phosphorus and coliform removal (disk filter, chemical injection, and UV system)
Backup power generation for reliability
A diffuser in the Sheep River to safely mix treated effluent
Through Alberta’s Municipal Water/Wastewater Partnership (AMWWP), the Government of Alberta provided up to $1,969,781 to help offset project cost escalation. This funding reduces long-term borrowing and lessens the financial impact on local taxpayers.
