Street Use Permits

What is a Street Use Permit?

A Street Use Permit is required when the road Right of Way must be used temporarily for a purpose other than its normal function. This typically applies when work cannot be safely or efficiently completed within private property boundaries.

Permits allow residents, contractors, movers, and businesses to use a portion of the roadway for a set period, helping ensure proper coordination and minimizing disruption to public spaces.

Types of Street Use Permits

General Obstruction Permit

Required for placing temporary items on the roadway or sidewalk, such as:

  • Storage pods

  • Moving containers

  • Landscaping materials

  • Commercial waste bins

Special Event Closure Permit

Required when closing a road for a public event (e.g., car shows, flea markets).
Applicants must also contact the Events Department to determine whether additional permits are needed.

Construction Roadway Closure Permit

Required for full or partial road closures due to construction activities, including:

  • Road tie-ins

  • House moves

  • Other major work requiring access to the road

How will I know if my permit is approved?

The Town will notify applicants electronically once a decision has been made. If a permit is denied, staff will follow up by phone or provide a written explanation via email or letter.

Can a permit be revoked?

Yes. The Town’s Municipal Enforcement team may revoke a permit if:

  • Conditions of the permit are not followed, or

  • A risk to public safety is identified

Municipal Enforcement may also issue fines for non-compliance with permit conditions.
